Very little is known about the educational pathways of students moving between the sectors of education and training at the post compulsory level. Institutional data collections such as the Australian Vocational Education and Training Management Information Statistical (AVETMIS) Standard, the Higher Education Statistics Collection and the National Schools Statistics Collection currently yield some information about student transitions between the sectors but there are inconsistencies and gaps in the information reported. These limitations restrict the potential to monitor student movement through post compulsory education and training. If the data collections for each sector were made more consistent, it would improve the utility of institutional data for both policy and research.
